12/13/2009 12:00:00 AM One company has only made six iPhone applications, and yet they have been in my list six times. Avalinx, a Dublin, Ohio-based company, is a maker of fine iPhone games. Most of their apps have to do with gambling, and all of them are fun. They contain stunning graphics, smooth gameplay, and actually teach you some nifty games. While each individual application does not merit placement as the third best app from 2009 (though some do merit placement in this top 10 list), the overall contribution of Avalinx merits such a grand placement. I strongly suggest trying some of their products today.

I thought I’d look at these games as a collective, and examine the ways in which they stand out from their competition. The graphics for all of the PRO series games are superb. Playing a game gives you pretty much exactly what you’d see at a casino table playing the same game in real life.

10/7/2008 12:00:00 AM 21 Pro - Blackjack enthusiast rejoice. This is by a long shot the best Blackjack sim I've seen almost anywhere. Graphics are surprisingly good for iPhone and the game has many play options along with various compendiums to supplement your knowledge of the game. Sadly there is no online option, but the cash out, and a few other option did give some finite point to the game are coming in next patches. Only true con to the game is that it crashes or refuses to boot up from time to time, but all you got to do is restart your iPhone and the things are back to normal.

As you start playing, it's immediately apparent that a lot of time was put into the game to make it lots of fun to play, for both pros and beginners alike.

Now here is a Blackjack game. 21 Pro approaches Blackjack from an almost professional angle, with Vegas rules, dealer tips that teach novice players when they should hit, stand, double down, split or surrender — there’s even a card counting tutor which is sure to be a big hit with casinos all along Vegas strip. A hit with an aluminum bat across your knees, that is, once the pit bosses discover your angle. Nevertheless, 21 Pro features some pretty snazzy graphics and decent animations supplied by 357am.com, and the gameplay is solid: Split up to 3 times (4 hands), double down, play last bet, full tutorials, tips and tricks on mastering the game, and a plethora of configurable options, including whether the dealer hits on a soft 17, the number of decks in the shoe, when the decks get shuffled, double down rules, selectable tablecloths and card backs, and more. The app is free but ad-sponsored, with fullscreen ads appearing between games. Frankly though, that’s a small price to pay for a blackjack game this good. If you like your card games so full of Vegas you can almost hear Wayne Newton belting it out from the lounge, 21 Pro: Blackjack has it all. If ads aren’t your thing, the full version can be had for $5.

Not only is it one of the city's most popular card games, but it's also in the spotlight, thanks to the novel and film 21, a story about a bunch of MIT nerds that learn card counting and subsequently win tons of cash. However, as the saying goes, you can only learn so much from a book. It's better to practice, and we strongly recommend 21 Pro: Blackjack, a free iPhone app that lets you learn the nuances of the game.

You get your standard blackjack game vs. the dealer, with your final goal being getting to 21 or as close as possible without going over, or “busting.” The thing that sepeates this blackjack game from the rest is the stuff outside of the main game. It has lessons that teach you about blackjack basic strategy and even card counting. To aid in card counting it will even give the running count at any time, or you can opt to have to count on the screen as you go. For a free blackjack game, there is really nothing else I can ask for, so that’s why I’m giving it a 9 out of 10.

Made it up to $12,500 then lost it all because I got to impatient and started betting to big. This game allows you to ask the dealer so you can get some help. It’s a great game and a ton of fun when you can’t make any noise.

I decided to start small with the free version, but I had my doubts about how advertising on the iPhone would disturb my playing pleasure. Turns out, the ads aren't all that bad.

I must admit though, Avalinx produced a visually exciting, easily playable game. 9/9/2008 12:00:00 AM Personally, I'm a rough sell with blackjack. I don't know if it's because I can't count cards and calculate odds, or if I'm just plain unlucky at the game. Fortunately, 21 Pro offers an excellent tutorial for players like me, from detailing the history of the game to tips on card counting. It's designed to make you a more formidable foe to the house when you hit the real felt.

For those who still do not know the rules: at Blackjack, you get two cards from the dealer, you always have to decide whether you choose to hit (not a card there) or stand (adapt).
